AVTRYKK                                                                                                                2024

AVTRYKK explores the inner life of human beings and how, as ceramic artists, we use the body to transform the intangible aspects of being human into tangible and concrete stoneware objects. Through touch, movement, and physical presence, the works give form to what cannot always be put into words.

Each piece is a new interpretation of a craft that has existed before. The works draw inspiration from Stone Age rituals, the thinkers of antiquity, the practical craftsmanship of the Middle Ages, and the decorative traditions of the Renaissance.

Through the creation of these works, I experience a strong sense of connection and kinship with the artisans who lived and worked before me. It brings a sense of calm to realize that across all times and cultures, human beings are fundamentally alike. The need to create and to communicate is universal.

When words fall short, the visual takes over.

EGO

In the Stone Age, pedestal bowls were used ceremonially for the skulls of the deceased – a form of respect for one’s ancestors. The size of the pedestal bowl symbolized the status of the deceased within the community.

There have always been differences between people.

“I find it beautiful how the body’s imprints and soft movements can be frozen in high-fired clay for eternity. I can see and feel that it is the body working with the clay, yet I understand that it is the soul that leaves its trace.

In most of my works, the spiral symbol is incorporated. The spiral can be interpreted in many ways, but I understand it as a symbol of movement, freedom, and as a portal to another world. The symbols imbue the works with spirit and awaken the ‘lifeless’ objects – the incisions and fingerprints that form the pieces bear witness to a human hand at work.”

ALMUE 2 (KRAFTSYMBOL // SYMBOL OF POWER)

Use it for your protection.

Powers: It protects your heart from negative intentions.

It fosters growth, development, and supports a life of flow and harmony.

JYDEPOTTE (SELVPORTRÆT // SELF-PORTRAIT)

The vessel is in transformation. It evolves, stretches, grows a neck and shoulders. The legs become longer.

Jydepotte changes form – almost without it being noticed.

A TRIBUTE TO 18TH-CENTURY FOLK ART

I am deeply moved by the way human beings, across all layers of society, have always felt the need to decorate their homes. By how certain forms of decoration and objects are perceived as more or less valuable depending on who created them.

By how, throughout all times and across all cultures, there has been a fundamental need to create.

By how, in essence, we are all the same.
